1871-1956. US abstract artist, an early
Cubist. He worked at the Bauhaus, a key
centre of design in Germany 1919-33 and later
helped to found the Bauhaus in Chicago. While
in Germany, he formed the Blaue Vier (Blue
Four) in 1924 with the painters Alexei von
Jawlensky (1864-1941), Wassily Kandinsky, and
Paul Klee.
